What’s Inside the COLLEGE LIST BUILDING BLUEPRINT?
MODULE 1: Exploring Colleges
To begin the process of college list building, students will start by exploring colleges. We’ll go over all of the basic college terminology and how to take part in effective college exploration. I share tutorials and demonstrations of the best resources to use when exploring colleges and how to use the tools so you can develop a full picture of what opportunities and experiences are available in a wide variety of colleges. After they have explored several colleges, they will participate in a guided reflection on what they are learning. By the end of Module 1, students will have developed an in-depth understanding of the wide variety of opportunities and experiences available at different colleges.
MODULE 2: The 8 Key Decisions
The 8 Key Decisions form the foundation upon which they will build their college list! They will go through exercises to help them determine their preferences around certain college characteristics including:
Campus Setting, Social Scene, and Area of Study
Specialized Experiences like studying abroad, co-op/internship, and undergraduate research opportunities
Extracurricular Activities including intramural sports, student government, and other clubs and activities
Academic Environment such as level of rigor, size of classes, and core curriculum requirements.
MODULE 3: Family Considerations
In Module 3 students will take part in structured family discussions where they will share their key decisions and discuss other key factors in the college list building and decision-making process including financial considerations, distance from home, and local support system. I encourage students throughout the College List Building Blueprint to share what they are learning so that their parents can walk through the process along-side them.
MODULE 4: Creating Your College Vision Board
This is my favorite module because it is when everything really begins to come into focus! In module 4, students will develop a College Vision Board to help guide and focus their college search.
MODULE 5: Using the College Search Tools
In Module 5 I will walk students through each of my favorite college search resources with in-depth tutorials and examples. Students will develop a broad list of 20-30 schools that match their key criteria.
MODULE 6: Crafting Your College List
And, finally, in Module 6 students will refine their college list down to 8-12 colleges through developing a college decision matrix! These schools will perfectly match the students’ personality, interests, career goals, and academic profile so they can have an amazing college experience!
